Ak15 Vs Ak47 - Like day and night, the AR-15 and AK-47 were designed for different purposes. Which is right for you? Key differences between AR-15 and AK-47:
Arguing whether an AR or AK is "better" is like arguing whether a Ford Mustang is better than a John Deere tractor. Both have four wheels, engines and transmissions, but they were designed for completely different applications. The AR and AK do exactly what they were designed to do, and both do it well.

The AR was a rifle that fired a medium sized cartridge. Only later was it produced as a carbine with a 16-inch barrel. The AK was chambered for the 7.62×39 cartridge and is a large submachine gun.
Which Is Better: The Russian Ak 47 Or The American Ar 15?
World War II was the catalyst for both weapons. There was no more trench warfare - the Germans had begun 'blitzkrieg' or 'ice warfare'. This principle relied on tanks, artillery and aircraft and enough ground forces to break the enemy, to destroy their defenses. In the first half of World War II, the Germans were almost unstoppable. After the war, the victors began to study, test and design weapons and tactics based on this new paradigm.
The time for the "between" cartridge had come. During the war, battle rifles ruled the field. These rifles fired full-size cartridges - 7.62x54R Mosin Nagant or American .30-06 M1 - with an effective range of 800 yards or more. WWII studies show that skirmishes occurred at much shorter distances, and firing more shots increased the chances of winning. Full automatic fire used by the Germans during the war was the way to victory. The medium cartridge, the German Sturmgewher, was smaller and fired from a small, light platform and was controllable under full autofire. Small rounds also allowed soldiers to carry the ammunition necessary to maintain a high rate of fire.
Interestingly, the Soviet Union, known for its heavy-handed bureaucracy, quickly went through the development and fielding of the AK-47. Design began in 1945 and the AK-47 was issued to the military in 1949. America, known for its innovation, has come a long way. Due to political pressure, financial support or antipathy, the US adopted the .308 caliber M14 in the mid-1950s. The M14 is still a heavy battle rifle, and the recoil from the .308 was too much to control on full auto. It did not perform well against the automatic fire of the AK in Vietnam, and was replaced by the fully automatic AR-15, now known as the M16, in the mid-60s.
Named after the Kalashnikov but designed by a team, the AK-47 is a simple, robust and reliable large submachine gun. Although simple, don't let that fool you: as Soviet weapons designer Georgy Shepgan said: "Complexity is easy. Simplicity is hard". Edited.

The AR is a bit more complicated than the AK. Here you can see the bolt groups, with the AK components on top, not disassembled. AR allows you to change things like extractors or springs without special tools or knowledge.
AK is easy to manufacture and cheap to manufacture. The original design used stamped and welded receivers, with furniture made from birch wood laminate, which is cheap and durable. It was designed with tight tolerances, making the AK a "self-cleaning" carbine as its fired dirt and debris were blown out of the AK.
The AR/M16 is almost the exact opposite of the AK. Although Stoner borrowed from others, such as the Kalashnikov, the final product was unique. It is more complex in design and production. Originally presented as just a rifle, the AR-15/M16 used aluminum, plastic, and a unique gas collection system that made recoil very controllable. In design and application, the AR-15/M16 is for professional soldiers.
Because of the AR's modular design—parts are easily interchangeable—the civilian market contributed heavily to the development of aftermarket parts. This includes free-floating handguards, a variety of barrel/caliber options, and improved trigger assemblies, just to name a few. The introduction of the flat top receiver in the early 90s was a big factor. Instead of a carrying handle, there is a Picatinny rail on the top for attaching various places. The military incorporated many of these features into special rifles and carbines.

AK accessories took a long time to hit the market. One factor was the lack of availability. AKs didn't really become popular and available in the US until the 1990s. Also, the AK is not as modular as the AR. Today, there are plenty of aftermarket parts for the AK, and basic configurations are available. It's almost so far that sometimes it's hard to quickly distinguish between an accessorized AR and an AK.
The simplicity of AK makes it easy to "learn". A large number of Soviet troops were illiterate, unable to read or write, and spoke different languages. You don't need a technical manual to learn how to use and maintain the AK: it divides the field into six main sections, making maintenance easy. Critical components with tight tolerances should not be isolated unless absolutely necessary. In fact, it's so simple that it became the standard weapon for child soldiers, little boys forced into combat during the African civil wars of the late 20th and early 2000s.
On the left is the .223 Rem./5.56 NATO. In the middle is the 7.62×39, the new 5.45×39 round for the AK-74. Each round does what it is designed to do. Which one you need depends on what you do.
The AR is more complex than the AK, but its ergonomics are much better. For example, it has a charging handle and a bolt catch. When the bolt is locked to the rear, such as on an empty reload, you use the bolt catch as a release as opposed to cycling the charging handle. This is much more useful than cycling the charging handle - with the AK, the charging handle is used for everything. Once you know the proper technique, it's easy for a right- or left-handed shooter to use an AR effectively.

No one questions AK's reliability. It has worked well in all kinds of environments and in all conditions. The gas piston design is perfect: you can bury an AK in the dirt, come back a year later, break open the bolt with your foot on the charging handle, dump some motor oil in it, and away you go. AK works.
Initially, the RR experienced some growing pains due to changes in design and components used in ammunition. Since then, it has truly earned the title of "America's Rifle," and is the longest serving standard issue rifle of the United States Armed Forces. Most people think the AR's gas pressure function is too dirty to be reliable. They get dirty - we have one with over 20,000 rounds through it without cleaning. However, the key is lubrication. Keep your AR "wet" and it will work reliably. At some point you will need to replace an extractor or ejector spring or gas ring on the bolt, but this is a simple task.
The AK-47 fires a 7.69×39 round (the AK-74, an updated version of the classic, fires the 5.45×39 caliber). Due to its loose tolerance, AK is not known for surgical accuracy. It will group 6 inches or so at 100 yards, with a maximum effective range of about 300 yards. For AK's design and purpose, it was well thought out. Today there are correct versions of the AK, but to me it goes against its design.
The AR is designed to tighter tolerances than the AK, making it very accurate. The first Colt H-Bar I bought in the 1980s shot 1-inch groups at 100 yards, as it came from the factory. With the right barrel/twist rate and the right ammunition, the AR can achieve accurate hits at 800 yards and beyond.
Taming The Beast, Silencing An Ak 47
So which one is best for you? I recommend at least one of each! Both the AK and AR are reliable, easy and fun to shoot, and they perform exactly as they were designed to do. I prefer to stick with the original concepts - my ARs are gas action and fire .223 Rem./5.56 NATO. My AKs are 7.62×39 with no modifications.
But if you want, you can get an AR with the AK's gas piston design, one that fires 7.62×39 ammo, or an AK that shoots .223/5.56 ammo. Whichever way you go, remember that it's up to you to learn how to use it safely and efficiently, and to acquire the knowledge and parts to maintain it, ensuring reliable service for years to come.
