Russia appears to be using its invasion of Ukraine as an opportunity to put the AK-12, the flagship model of the AK series, through a real test.

According to reports, Kalashnikov is modifying the AK-12 rifle based on the experience of "Russian military special operations" in Ukraine.

The last production version of the AK-12 was based on the AK-400 model. The development proved to be "reliable, comprehensive, and compatible with modern Russian equipment."

But the AK-12's status as a "highly sought after" weapon is not only about its capabilities, but also because of the evidence supporting it as a marketing ploy.

Russia's New Weapon Of Choice

Overcoming cultural and language barriers, Russia seems to be adopting and developing new weapons all the time. While the new weapon eventually became the standard weapon of the Russian army, another newcomer entered production and took control of the weapon. Trying to keep up with Russian rifles naturally led me down a rabbit hole of the latest military rifle, the AK-12.
The AK-12 entered service in 2018 after a long period of development, testing, and prototyping. This rifle is the last to be delivered to thousands of units of the Russian army. The US and Russian armies have always traded over who can launch the most powerful modern artillery. In 1947, the Soviets came at us with the AK-47, but we quickly overcame them with the more modern M16, and they've been chasing us ever since.
The AK-12 marks the Russian military's entry into the modern carbine category. Think of the AK-12 as a modern version of the AK 74. It is a very modern version of the classic AK, while following some of the style of the M4 pushing the old design forward.
