These guns are popular for good reason. Pick one of these to put next to your bed and you'll be much more prepared for the worst than if you had nothing. That said, let's first go over the history behind these two stalwart guns.

His solution combined what he recognized as the best features of the American M1 carbine and the German StG 44. The AK-47 is now the most produced firearm in history, with 150 million in existence at one point. This fact alone really proves Kalashnikov's success.
The "AR" in AR-15 stands for "ArmaLite Rifle," despite what some media would have you believe. The rifle has its origins after World War II when the US Army was looking for a single weapon to replace the M1 Garand, Thompson submachine gun and other firearms.
ArmaLite introduced several AR-10 prototypes designed by Eugene Stoner to the military in 1956, and while the design was innovative and light at 6.85 pounds, the military chose Fabrique Nationale's T48 (now known as FAL) chambering instead. 7.62×51. However, the military found the M14 inferior to the AK-47 during the Vietnam War, so they soon adopted a scaled-down version of the AR-10 for service called the AR-15. Because the AR-15 was chambered for the 5.56×45, a smaller cartridge than the 7.62×51, soldiers could carry three times as much ammunition for it. ArmaLite sold the rights to the AR-15 in 1959 to Colt, which still manufactures it today. Countless other manufacturers also offer their own AR-15 style rifles.
Of course, although the AK-47 and AR-15 were designed as automatic weapons, they were later redesigned as semi-automatic weapons that were sold on the general market. Walk into a gun store and buy one and you won't have to worry about the ATF throwing smoke bombs through your windows at night. (However, some states restrict the sale of certain types of semi-automatic firearms.) However, while both types of guns serve the same purpose of quickly stabbing things, they are quite different from each other.

The biggest difference between the two guns is their ammunition. The AK-47 fires the 7.62×39 cartridge, while the classic AR-15 is chambered for 5.56 (and/or 223 Remington). Overall, the 7.62 fires a 123-grain bullet at 2,350 feet per second. A standard 5.56×45 fires a 55 round at 3000 feet per second.
Needless to say, you wouldn't want two calibers to hit you. Without going into physics, it's safe to say that the 5.56 is superior in terms of faster muzzle velocity and smoother trajectory.
The heavier 7.62 bullet, however, has a larger frontal area. So its will does more damage and creates a wider wound channel. This effect can be quite exaggerated if you are firing a bullet that expands on penetration. (Note that highly modifiable AR-15s can also be chambered to shoot a wide variety of calibers. Just consider 5.56×45 the default setting.)
The gas-operated AK-47 and the manual-action AR-15 are significantly different from each other. When you equip both guns with 16 inch barrels, the AK-47 is less accurate. Expect two to five minutes of accuracy on most devices, as opposed to one to three on the AR-15.

The effective range of the AK-47 is shorter than the AR-15, although this probably won't affect your ability to defend yourself. The AK-47 is effective out to over 400 yards when fired in semi-automatic situations, a much greater distance than your attacker is likely to engage you. In general, the AK-47 also produces more recoil, which can affect your ability to accurately aim fast shots.
If your only criteria for choosing a self-defense rifle is post-apocalyptic performance, the AK-47 beats the AR-15. At least in terms of reputation.
The AK-47 is a legendary crude weapon. Smother it full of sand, dirt and mud and you probably won't even witness a hiccup. The AR-15 is by no means a piece of cake, but it generally requires more maintenance than the Russian beast if it is to perform reliably.
The AK-47 is cheaper to own and shoot. His ammo is almost always cheaper. You can find tons of steel coated pellets that the AK-47 will happily drink. You can get a reliable AK-47 for around $500. The AR-15 is good for pushing you further back when engaging in "window dressing".

Aside from a magazine, scope mount, and possibly a revolver, the AK-47 isn't ready to accept many modifications or additions. It's a lot different than a highly customized AR-15. What you see is what you get, but the AK-47 is an aesthetically pleasing rifle, especially with the walnut furniture.
The AR-15, on the other hand, seems to have been invented for extra accessories. Have you ever heard “This is my grandfather's axe? "My father changed the handle and I changed the head."
Even for the layman, it's so easy to change the barrel, furniture, and other parts of an AR-15 and attach lights, gauges, lasers, and other accessories to it, that the finished product doesn't even resemble the original product. . That could be a rabbit hole that ultimately makes the AR-15 cost significantly more than any AK-47. Unless, of course, you have a gold-plated AK, usually reserved for warheads in action movies.
Consider all of this information when deciding which rifle to invest in. But remember, your choice shouldn't be fixed until you've shot both the AK-47 and the AR-15.

The age of the first truly successful assault rifle began at the end of World War II. One such weapon was the Storm (Assault) Gun, known as the StG 44 (Sturmgewehr 44), which had the ability to suppress the enemy under fire without the earlier two-man machine gun method. The StG 44 had a spring-loaded magazine that could hold up to 30 rounds of the 7.92x33mm Kurz cartridge. The detachable magazine was curved and the rounds were fed with a slanted bolt design that was retracted from a gas-operated piston that automatically filled the chamber after each shot. After the defeat of Nazi Germany, countries including the United States and Soviet Russia began to create their own versions based on the Storm Rifle concept with different functional internal designs. This paved the way for Mikhail Kalashnikov and Eugene Stoner, two of the most famous assault rifle designers in the Eastern and Western Hemispheres, to become some of the most successful individual firearms designers of the 20th century.
