Italy, Japan and Britain have announced plans to join a fighter jet development project in a partnership that marks Japan's first industrial defense collaboration outside the United States since World War II.
The agreement aims to operate advanced front-line combat aircraft by 2035, combining the UK-led Future Combat Air System project, also known as Tempest, with Japan's F-X programme, the three countries said in a joint statement on Friday.
"We are committed to maintaining a rules-based, free and open international order, which is more important than ever when these principles are challenged, and threats and aggression increase," the three country leaders said in a statement.

The agreement comes as China ramps up military activity across Taiwan - which it claims as its own - and in the disputed South China Sea where Beijing has sought to bolster its claims with military installations on artificial islands it has built.

The Mitsubishi F-X (informally referred to as the F-3) is a sixth-generation stealth fighter aircraft developed for the Japan Self-Defense Force (JASDF).
